Wedding Day

I am the grass as I wound up your dad's
hands that pulled from the lawn
as a gesture for the measure of
love it would take until the dawn
to pull every blade as I laid at your feet
the clippings where you would walk
as you talk to your future husband
seeing your siblings on
your wedding day
in the parade
hand in
hand
holding yours
to give you away
I hope you understand

I am the air that fills your despair
in the bicycle as you try
to go beyond training wheels
as you fall to the side on the lawn
as you pass the sidewalk
riding your bike
falling
to softly land on the padding
I handed you from
a trike
To lovingly give you
a soft place to lay your head
As I know one day
my life is no longer
alive
but dead

I am the cat that shared your bed
at the foot of your dreams
purring in your ear as you awake
to the means
Going to school
and showing the world
at show and tell
Letting them know how I loved you
by wrapping around your legs as well
when you opened the wet can of cat food
for a treat as you know you'd never replace
the debt I have for you being my sweet
My living is giving you the very best
making sure you're always secure
as I finally give you away

I am the dog that licks your face
as you play with the puppy making
you laugh at all we have
from the picket fence
to how lucky it feels
to know the way you grew
from a girl to a bride
and how I pulled every blade
to let you understand why
I love to see you happy
with your new found love
for the rest of your life
with the sound of a dove
